Some of the most powerful evidence in all of social science comes from following children for decades. What happens to kids who attend high-quality early programs — versus those who don't?

Two studies that followed kids into adulthood

The Perry Preschool Project and the Carolina Abecedarian Project randomly enrolled disadvantaged children in high-quality early programs in the 1960s–70s, then tracked them for 30–40+ years. Compared with peers who did not attend, participants went on to show striking differences.

šŸŽ“
SCHOOL YEARS

More school success

Higher achievement and graduation rates, with less need for special education.

šŸ’¼
ADULTHOOD

Higher employment & income

More likely to be employed and earning more as adults.

LIFELONG

Better health

Abecedarian adults showed better health markers, including lower blood pressure years later.

SOCIETY

Less involvement in crime

Lower rates of arrest and incarceration than peers who did not attend.

Why the effects last

Early childhood is when the brain builds its core architecture. Quality programs strengthen not just early academics but self-control, motivation and social skills — the durable "soft skills" that compound over a lifetime.

An important caveat

These famous studies focused on disadvantaged children receiving intensive, high-quality programs, so the dramatic gains won't map identically to every family. But the core lesson is universal: quality early experiences pay dividends for years.

From Shadi: I think about this every day. The habits we nurture now — curiosity, kindness, confidence — are seeds. Parents rarely see them bloom for years, but they do.
