The Economic Return of Early Childhood Care: Why It Pays Off (13% ROI)

Early childhood care isn't only about today — economists have put a number on its lifelong payoff, and it's remarkably high.

A Nobel laureate ran the numbers

Economist James Heckman and colleagues analyzed children followed for decades and estimated that high-quality, comprehensive birth-to-five programs return about 13% per child, per year — through better outcomes in education, health, employment and reduced social costs. Earlier work on preschool for 3–4 year-olds estimated a 7–10% return.

High-quality birth-to-five program~13%/yr
Preschool (ages 3–4)~7–10%/yr
Long-run stock market (for comparison)~7%/yr

Return-on-investment estimates from Heckman and colleagues (University of Chicago); stock-market figure is a common long-run benchmark for comparison only.

Where the payoff comes from

What it means for your family

The studies measured large public programs for disadvantaged children, so your child's "return" won't be a tidy 13%. But the principle holds: dollars and hours invested in quality early care are among the highest-yielding investments a family or society can make — because they compound across a lifetime.

From Shadi: Families sometimes weigh the cost of care. I gently remind them: these years only happen once, and the research is clear that quality care during them pays back for decades.
