It's a fair question every working parent asks. Here's an honest, research-based look at how the amount of daycare relates to children's behavior.

What the research found

In the NICHD study, a higher quantity of hours in care was modestly associated with more caregiver-reported behavior problems (like assertiveness or low-level acting out) through the early school years. Importantly, the effects were small — and much weaker than the influence of parenting and family environment.

Quality changes the equation

The same research repeatedly shows that warm, sensitive, small-group care buffers the effects of long hours. A child in a calm, responsive setting with a consistent caregiver fares very differently than one in a chaotic, high-turnover room — even for the same number of hours.

Practical guidance for families

From Shadi: Some of our families need long or overnight hours, and their children thrive — because the hours here are calm, warm and consistent. Quality is what protects a child, far more than the clock.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours of daycare is too much?
Research links very long hours with modestly more behavior issues, but the effect is small. Quality, warmth and consistency matter far more than the number of hours.
Is full-time or overnight daycare bad for kids?
Not inherently. In warm, sensitive, small-group care with a consistent caregiver, children can thrive even with long or flexible hours. Quality is the deciding factor.
