If quality is the factor that decides whether daycare helps a child, the obvious next question is: what does quality actually look like? Here's the research-backed checklist.
Quality has two parts
Researchers describe structural quality (the measurable things — ratios, group size, caregiver training) and process quality (the warmth and richness of everyday interactions). The NICHD study found that programs meeting more recognized standards produced better school-readiness and behavioral outcomes — and that warm, language-rich interaction is the heart of it.
The checklist
| Look for… | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Small groups & good ratios | More individual attention and language per child |
| A consistent caregiver | Secure attachment buffers stress and builds trust |
| Warm, responsive interaction | "Process quality" — the strongest driver of outcomes |
| Licensing & safety standards met | Health, supervision and accountability |
| Language-rich, play-based day | Builds vocabulary, thinking and self-regulation |
| Low caregiver turnover | Stability matters for young children's wellbeing |
Questions to ask on a tour
- How many children are here, and who cares for them each day?
- How long have the caregivers been here? (Stability matters.)
- What does a typical day look like?
- How do you handle comforting, naps, meals and conflicts?
- Are you licensed, and can I verify it?
From Shadi: Trust your senses on a tour. Is the room calm? Are children engaged and comfortable? Is the caregiver down at their level, talking with them? That warmth is the quality research keeps pointing to.
