Many parents wonder whether staying home or attending daycare is better for a child's social development. Research offers a reassuring, balanced picture.

What research suggests

Studies including the NICHD research have linked quality group and center-based care with better social competence and stronger early peer skills compared with settings of similar quality. Group care gives children daily, low-stakes practice at the social skills that matter: sharing, turn-taking, reading faces and resolving small conflicts.

Peer play may even lower stress

In one study of toddlers in full-day care, children who played more with peers showed lower cortisol (a stress hormone) across the day. In other words, positive social engagement isn't just enrichment — it can help children feel regulated and secure.

Staying home has real strengths too

Home time with a loving parent or caregiver builds deep attachment and rich one-on-one language. This isn't an either/or: many children thrive with a blend, and the quality of relationships — at home or in care — matters more than the setting itself.

Social skills children practice in group care

From Shadi: Our mixed-age home setting is wonderful for this. Older children practice patience and leadership; younger ones learn by watching. It feels a lot like a big, busy family.
